Hearken! O deep-sleepers!

أَلا أَيُّها النوّامُ وَيَحكُمُ هُبّوا

Hearken! O deep-sleepers!
Woe unto ye, arise!

أُسائِلُكُم هَل يَقتُلُ الرَجُلَ الحُبُّ

I am asking you:
“Will man kill love?”

فَقالوا نَعَم حَتّى يَرُضَّ عِظامَهُ

So they said: “yes—
‘Till crushed are his bones

وَيَترُكَهُ حَيرانَ لَيسَ لَهُ لُبُّ

And he is left in despair,
Without substance—

فَيا بَعلَ لَيلى كَيفَ يُجمَعُ شَملُنا

So O husband of Leyla,
How will our affair meet

لَدَيَّ وَفيما بَينَنا شَبَّتِ الحَربُ

Before me, when between us
War has commenced:

لَها مِثلُ ذَنبي اليَومَ إِن كُنتُ مُذنِباً

To her is sin as is mine
Today, if I am to sin,

وَلا ذَنبَ لي إِن كانَ لَيسَ لَها ذَنبُ

And, no sin then on me,
Should she be without sin—
